Moving Day Countdown!

As you make a decision to move and move day draws near, it can be overwhelming to think about everything that needs to be done. It’s always nice to have a checklist helping to guide you through the last couple of months before a move and remind you the best way to pace yourself. Below we have outlined some helpful tips to get you going, starting 2 months before the move all the way through moving day. Happy sorting, organizing, packing, and moving!!

Moving Day Preparation Countdown
2 Months before you are moving:
 Go through all your possessions and determine what items you are no longer in need of. You should donate or discard these items before you move.
 Have someone appraise your valuables including antiques and fine art for the purpose of insurance.
 Begin keeping a file of all paperwork relating to the move (estimates, receipts, contact information).
 Plan any necessary travel arrangements.
 Change your address with the Postal service, banks, magazines, etc. Be sure to give them an accurate start date.
1 Month before you are moving:
 Get in contact with utility companies for your current and future home to start/stop services.
 Choose a convenient spot in your home to store items that have already been packed.
 Start packing away items that are unessential.
 Make sure your property will be insured while it is being moved.
Between 2 and 3 weeks before you are moving:
 Keep packing
 Have a garage/moving sale.
 Contact local charities to pick up unwanted items and get a receipt for tax purposes.
 Give back borrowed items to their owners.
 Have medical, dental and veterinary records transferred.
1 week before you are moving:
 Keep packing.
 Separate any items you are planning to transport yourself from the items being moved for you.
 Pack a separate bag with clothes, toiletries, medication and snacks for the first evening in your new home.
 Pack one box with items that will be needed right away, for example; toilet paper, paper towels, trash bags, etc.
 Disconnect and prepare any appliances that will be moved.
 Drain tools and equipment of gas, oil and water.
The day you are moving:
 Be prepared for you or a representative to be at your old home to answer any questions the movers may have.
 Check your possessions as they are brought into your new residence to note any damage.
